Birkin Bags Record Auction Price in Hong Kong

A fuschia diamond-encrusted Hermès Birkin bag snatched an auction record price of 1.72 million Hong Kong dollars ($221,846) at a Christie's sale on Monday.
An anonymous phone bidder was the winner at an afternoon handbags and accessories sale in Hong Kong.
The price surpassed a previous record of $203,150 set by a diamond-adorned rouge crocodile Hermès Birkin sold at Heritage Auctions in New York in 2011. (A diamond and gold evening bag once owned by Elizabeth Taylor brought $218,500 at Christie's in New York in 2011, but it was categorized in jewelry.)
The most expensive handbag ever sold is believed to be a Hermès Himalayan crocodile Birkin that fetched $432,000 directly from the French luxury goods maker.
