A bill was passed through the New York State Legislature to create a biannual award giving an artist recipient $10,000 and two state-subsidized public exhibitions.
The Edward Hopper Citation of Merit, named for the renowned New York-born artist, will be presented to “a distinguished New York visual artist who is making a significant contribution to the advancement of the arts in New York State”, according to the bill.
In honor of Hopper, an exhibition of the recipient's work will be mounted at The Edward Hopper House Art Center, which is the artist’s birthplace in Nyack, and another venue.
The bill for a “State Visual Artist" awaits Governor Cuomo's signature before becoming law.
