A multiyear, $64-million effort is concluding with the final touches coming together on the Columbus Museum of Art's 50,000-square-foot addition and renovation of a wing built in 1974.
Grand opening celebrations will be held Oct. 22-25, 2015, for the new Margaret M. Walter Wing named in recognition of Robert D. and Margaret "Peggy" Walters' transformational $10 million donation to the Columbus Museum of Art. The Walters donation remains the largest gift in the museum's history and became the foundation for the museum's Art Matters Endowment and Capital Campaign.
Peggy Walters began her support of the museum in 1971 as a docent, and went on to serve on its board. Robert Walters has been the long-time CEO of Cardinal Health, Inc.
The $37.6 million third phase of the project included a new entrance, sculpture garden, cafe, store, meeting and event space, and new gallery spaces for the museum's permanent collection and exhibitions. The Ohio museum has been closed since Sept. 7 while work was completed on 147,000 square feet of space, up from 96,000.
