Hema Upadhyay, the renowned Indian artist, and her legal counsel, Harish Bhambhani, were found dead in Mumbai on Dec. 12.
Police are investigating the deaths as murders and several people have been questioned, including Upadhyay's ex-husband. The 43-year-old artist and her lawyer were found bound and wrapped in plastic inside boxes placed in a street drain, according to police reports.
Upadhyay was known for her photographs and mixed media depictions of Mumbai urban life and landscapes, along with themes of migration and dislocation. Her installation "Think Left, Think Right, Think Low, Think Tight" was shown at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2011. She also was featured at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, and the Hangar Bicocca in Milan.
Solo exhibits included: Modernization, The Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, USA (2013); and Espace Topographie de l’Art, Festival D’ Automne a Paris (2011); Mute Migration, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia (2012); Where the bees suck, there suck I, at the reopening of MACRO museum, Rome Italy (2009).
"The news of her death and her body wrapped in plastic had a strange macabre surrealism because the murderer knew her language -- he/she placed her remains like a dead fish in a dreary landscape of viciousness and hatred. RIP beautiful person," wrote Uma Nair in a post for Times of India.
