Portland Museum of Art to Unveil Two Major Acquisitions

The 135-year-old Portland Museum of Art in Maine is undergoing a transformation. After a first phase of refurbishment, this noted repository of American, European and contemporary art -- including a trove of Winslow Homer works and the artist's studio -- will open with some changes later this month. A highlight will be two important recent acquistions.
"River Cove" by Andrew Wyeth and Winslow Homer's "An Open Window" will debut on Jan. 22.
Maine Public Broadcasting reports that the museum acquired "An Open Window," painted in Homer's mid-career in 1872, through a partial donation from an anonymous family and with funds.
Andrew Wyeth's "River Cove" was donated by philanthropist David Rockefeller in honor of his late son, Richard.
A Community Open House on Jan. 23 will include the major exhibitions Masterworks on Paper: Highlights from the Portland Museum of Art and Duncan Hewitt: Turning Strange along with the unveiling of brand new spaces, including The Workshop, the PMA's new participatory space.
