Knoedler and the De Soles Settle in Fake Rothko Trial

Knoedler & Co. settled with the collectors Domenico and Eleanore De Sole in a highly-watched trial that paraded art experts, curators and artists' family members on the witness stand. The trial undfolded over 12 days in Federal Court in Manhattan, until Wednesday when the parties announced a settlement. The terms were not disclosed.
Former gallery director Ann Freedman settled with the De Soles on Sunday. Her testimony, and that of gallery owner Michael Hammer, was expected on Tuesday, but the trial was then suspended.
Before the settlement, the De Soles got their message out over the "racketeering scheme" they said Knoedler played a part in to sell them a fake Mark Rothko painting. The couple sought $25 million in damages for the $8.3 million forgery, which was actually the work of a Chinese immigrant in a Bronx studio.
