Trials began in Paris on Monday for six auctioneers and dozens of art handlers from one of France's oldest and most well-known auction houses who are accused of stealing thousands of items from consignors.

An early oil by Gustave Courbet is among 250 tons of art and collectibles allegedly stolen by the Hotel Drouot auction staff between 2006 and 2009. Pilfered items, valued at around €2.2m, were found tucked away in staff homes and warehouses, and some pieces were sold at the auction house.

Charges of gang-related theft, conspiracy to commit a crime or handling stolen goods have been levied against nearly 50 people. The auction house's entire handler staff was replaced in 2010 and an investigation has been ongoing.
