Two members of the Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission are reportedly offended by an artwork in an exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art and have threatened to withdraw public funds from the museum over its display.
"Rosie's Tea Party," by artist Mark Ryden, depicts a young girl dressed for her First Communion slicing up a ham labeled "Mystici Corporis Christi," which is Latin for "mystical body of Christ." Party-goers, including a bunny, sit around a table with a bottle of wine bearing a picture of Jesus.
The National Coalition Against Censorship wrote a letter to the two commissioners, saying: "Anybody is entitled to criticize art in an exhibition, but First Amendment principles bar government officials from discriminating against controversial viewpoints."
