A new round of high caliber art exhibits commences after the successful conclusion of Quadrienniale 2010.

2011 will be another year of exciting new exhibitions, following the Quadriennale 2010, an immensely successful collaboration of exhibits staged by the city’s major art museums and institutions that reaffirmed Düsseldorf’s reputation as one of Europe’s art centers. 

Preview of upcoming 2011 shows

"The Düsseldorf School of Painting - Crossing Bridges between Cultures" at Museum Kunstpalast, September 24, 2011, to January 23, 2012, is the first comprehensive exhibit of the Düsseldorf School of Painting in more than 30 years, and will be the highlight of the season. The Düsseldorf School of Painting (1819 - 1918) included more than 4,000 artists from all over Europe, the US and Russia who were drawn to Düsseldorf for its renowned Academy of Art. Artists such as A. Achenbach, A. Böcklin, C.F. Lessing, and W. von Schadow will be shown, as well as works by Emanuel Leutze whose picture "Washington Crossing the Delaware," painted in Düsseldorf, became a national icon of the independence movement in America.

"The Other Side of the Moon – Female Artists of the Avant-Garde" at the K20, October 22, 2011, to January 15, 2012, will be the year’s most anticipated exhibit at this venue, which houses the collection of the State of North Rhine Westphalia.  The focus of this exhibit is women in the 1920s and 30s who were formative for the avant-garde.  Another major exhibit at K20 will be a solo show by Düsseldorf photographer Thomas Struth, February 26 - June 19, 2011.

Two leading exhibits at the Akademie-Galerie – Die Neue Sammlung (New Collection) this year will be: "Rendezvous of the Painters," May 5 – July 1, 2011, showing paintings from the years 1946-1986 from the Art Academy.  Starting on September 16, the focus of the venue will switch to photography at the Academy of Art Düsseldorf.

The Kunsthalle Düsseldorf opens its extensive program of exhibitions in 2011 with “KRIWET – yester‘n‘today,” February 19 - May 1, 2011. The complete works of Düsseldorf native Ferdinand Kriwet are presented by the Kunsthalle - the world's first institution to do so - in a comprehensive solo exhibit. The retrospective exhibition is the first comprehensive overview of Kriwet’s multifaceted oeuvre.

KIT – Kunst im Tunnel (Art in Tunnel) will feature 6 exhibits in 2011, all of which are by Academy graduates from other European countries, in an effort to show the strong international ties of the Academy and the city of Düsseldorf.  The first exhibit of the cycle will be“Der Menschen Klee,” from February 18 – April 3, 2011.

The Kunstverein of Rheinland and Westphalia will show “Habitat - A Group Exhibition in Multiple Parts," May 20 - October 3, 2011, as well as 2 solo exhibitions. One is by Polish artist Michal Budny, February 19 – May 1, 2011. The second is by Portuguese artist Leonor Antunes, October 21, 2011 – mid-January 2012.

“El Greco and Early German Expressionism” at the Museum Kunstpalast, April 21 - August 5, 2012, is an exhibit that examines the affinity between early German Expressionism and El Greco using original paintings. Many of the works on exhibit mirror the fascination that El Greco generated in artists such as Oskar Kokoschka, Max Oppenheimer, Max Beckmann and others.
