Phillips Presents Digital Soupcan Moment, An Online Auction from Soupcans Labs
Featuring 9 Unique NFTs Open from 15 – 18 August
NEW YORK – 15 AUGUST 2022 – Phillips is pleased to announce the online auction Digital Soupcan Moment, a collection of 9 1 of 1 NFTs from Soupcans Labs open for bidding here from 15 – 18 August. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s Soup Can series that radically challenged the tradition of painting, Soupcans Labs bridges art history and technology, past and present, while generating new experiential opportunities for today’s digital age. Collaborating with individuals from the art world and creators in Web3 development, Soupcans Labs reimagines art historical masterpieces with AI technology, using the concept of artistic inspiration as its foundation. By plunging iconic art into the digital realm, Soupcans Labs’ debut collection takes the canvas from the wall to the blockchain, opening the door to a whole new type of patronage.
Analyzing the style, technique, and specific brushstrokes of Old and Modern masters, each piece in the collection begins with a three-dimensional rendering of the source work followed by superimposing various painterly processes to evoke physical surface textures. Each work in the collection is the result of no less than fifty separate layers of digital editing. At once literal and metaphorical, this act of layering begets the question of the myriad references drawn from the source work to inspire new imagery throughout the course of visual culture. Thus, the unique works gather inspiration across a multitude of fields and eras, from the Renaissance to the crypto sphere.
Digital Soupcan Moment represents the first discrete crypto collection from Soupcans Labs. The nine 1 of 1 NFTs chosen to launch the project will secure owners a spot on the allowlist for Soupcans Labs’ future collections, which will grant token-holders special access to a host of community-oriented offerings and serve as an entry into an evolving members club where new benefits will continue to unfold.
Featured above, Mushrooms with Vase exemplifies how the digital and physical worlds have become increasingly intertwined through a digital interpretation of color, texture, and form, pulling inspiration not only from Van Gogh’s Sunflowers but also contemporary renditions from the likes of David Hockney to Banksy. Alongside that is Vermeer Influencer, a caricature of the modern social-media influencer by way of the Dutch Golden Age by emphasizing the mystery and silent seduction of Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. The 3D transformation of the figure’s modified eyes calls attention to the trend of influencers distorting their online appearance through various photographic filters.
One of the other nine works includes an ultra-contemporary take on Leonardo da Vinci’s best-known work with Mona paying homage to famous reinterpretations of the painting. Using a bucket hat to obscure her knowing glance, the “of the moment” accessory propels her into the digital age with ease. Creating another blend of classic and current, the cartoonish and playful Sailor Prince Louie merges the romanticism of Monet’s The Japanese Footbridge with a modern-day retooling of Renoir’s Sailor Boy. In Soupcans Labs’ work, the subject’s comedic wide eyes reflect those of video game characters that are familiar to kids his age today, blurring the line between the physical and the digital.
