FORT WORTH–Works on display later this summer at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center will explore the topic of privileged ignorance. Local artist Allison Proulx depicts flourishing city centers layered over elements of frequently catastrophic current events.

“The ease with which we are able to overlook global chaos and suffering reflects how desensitized and disconnected we can be from this side of the human experience,” says Proulx, who is finishing her MFA at Texas Woman’s University.

Privileged Ignorance is being shown concurrently with Strangers: The Artwork of Maryanne Meltzer, a local artist who explored the topics of strangers and human alienation in the 1980s and 1990s.

“When I saw Maryanne’s work, I immediately felt a connection with her, a kindred spirit of sorts,” Proulx says. “Her theme of alienation resonated with my urban landscapes reflecting one’s solitude amidst the crowd, constantly attempting to process the continuous bombardment of the media while carrying on our daily lives.”

A reception for Privileged Ignorance and Strangers will be held August 15, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, 1300 Gendy Street in Fort Worth (next to the Amon Carter Museum of American Art).
