Clarke Auction Gallery in Larchmont, NY sold a 1972 map painting by celebrated British artist Frank Bowling for $275,000 in their November 7th auction, well above the painting’s $30,000-50,000 pre-sale estimate. Bowling, born in Guyana in 1934, is one of the most acclaimed living abstractionists. He lives and works in both New York and London and has been the subject of much attention following the inclusion of his work in the Tate Modern’s 2017 exhibition The Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power.

The Bowling sold at Clarke came from a private Manhattan collection. The painting generated interest globally and sold to a telephone bidder after several minutes of spirited bidding.

Clarke Auction’s next sale will take place on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at 10:00 AM EST. Those can view that sale’s catalog at www.clarkeny.com
