Arshile Gorky, a master of reinvention, was perhaps once the greatest painter in America. Having spent two decades catching on to the coat-tails of style he had developed a tentative yet expansive originality just before total despair overwhelmed him. His death at a young age left the field open for his rival Jackson Pollock, says writer William Feaver.
