A consortium of museums will present a new website of works by famed 19th-century marine artist Fitz Henry Lane next month. Fitzhenrylaneonline.org is one of several catalogue raisonnes, those exhaustive tomes that document an artist's oeuvre, in the works for American artists.
So far, there are 320 paintings, drawings, and prints by Lane included in the digital catalog. Information will be fluid and crowdsourced, allowing the website to be "expanded infintely," explans senior researcher Melissa Geisler Trafton. Images of works by Lane will be linked to all known data on the artist--from client biographies to maps of harbors that he painted.
Similar sites in the works include Manhattan art dealer Betty Krulik's research on the impressionist Willard Leroy Metcalf and a catalogue raisonne for Dawson Dawson-Watson, the British-born painter who was profilic in places along the East Coast to Giverny.
