Maximillian Gallery is pleased to present works by Jérôme Curchod. His artistic process mixes aspects of hand-drawing with digital and photographic imagery. These elements are combined, then printed on paper or large pieces of fabric, and often embossed—after making negatives and burning printing plates—thus bridging technology and traditional techniques. The compounding of abstract forms and textures with the energy of color and contrasts make for original and engaging works of art.

Jérôme’s interest in printing comes from his graphic design background. Starting his career in the early 90s, he experienced the drastic shift in technology that was affecting all communication arts. The age of the analog was over, the typesetters and the photo-lithographers were becoming a thing of the past, and the entire industry was moving toward the digital era.

But the artistic process can always be nurtured and challenged by a combination of the old and the new, and Jérôme is constantly searching the past and welcoming the future to help expand his visual language. He recently started working with wood, creating wall sculptures.

Biography:

Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, and living in Los Angeles since 1993, Jérôme graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. He worked for many years as creative director of a series of art and music magazines (RayGun, huH, Sweater), alongside David Carson, Vaughan Oliver (4AD label in London) as well as Laurie and P. Scott Makela— heads of the prestigious Academy of Art of Cranbrook, in Detroit, in the late 90s. He then focused his design interests toward the field of event promotion, working with a number of music and film festivals (notably Col•Coa, the annual French Film Festival in Hollywood), in the U.S. and abroad.

As an artist, Jérôme developed his interest in mixing new and old technologies by first cre- ating works on a 1963 Vandercook letterpress, outputting negatives digitally and burning his own plates. He then took that practice and expanded it, to include large (3”x7”) prints on fabric, which are printed on modern equipment. He’s has been having solo shows in Los Angeles and in Switzerland since 2006.
