Lawrence Fine Art is pleased to announce that it will open "Steve Joester: From London to Havana: Rock and the Rhythm" at its East Hampton Gallery on Saturday of Labor Day weekend. The show will continue for approximately three-and-a-half weeks.
Joester is an acclaimed rock-and-roll photographer. At the same time, as a British citizen, he has visited Cuba often and has photographed Old Havana numerous times since the 1990s.
"We started talking about this idea even before the recent U.S.-Cuba rapprochement," explained gallery director Howard Shapiro. "We wanted to illustrate the contrast of the frenetic, almost chaotic Western cultural world with a place that has been practically suspended in time."
British artist Steve Joester began his career as a photographer working with the leading rock stars of the 80's. His work with The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Queen, Pink Floyd, The Police and leading punk bands including Blondie, The Sex Pistols and The Ramones established him as a leading rock and roll photographer. After years of shooting live shows, and album and magazine covers, Steve returned to art in 2003, creating multi-material works using his photographs of these stars. .
"Decades after shooting my rock n roll photographs, I was stuck by the cultural impact of these musicians and began to create the multi-material works featuring the timeless energy and charisma of these iconic artists," said Joester. 'My Cuba pieces reflect the flip side of the coin, with people whose lives are almost suspended in time yet always moving to the unique rhythm of Old Havana."
Joester's originals are in collections in London, New York and Milan, and featured in Ralph Lauren flagship stores in Amsterdam, Paris and Malaysia. His one man shows include Morrison Hotel CBGB in NYC, Morrison Hotel in Manhasset, NY, and Lawrence Fine Art, East Hampton. He has collaborated with a number of New York-based Street artists including LA2 and Tats Cru.
