Carlyle Galleries International, Inc., (www.carlyle-auctions.com) the online fine art dealers and auctioneers, recently conducted a survey of art collectors, and galleries worldwide to see what impact each Presidential candidate would have on the art market.

The Presidential election is less than 45 days away. With a choice between two highly polarizing candidates, the winner of the election is certain to change the mood for millions of voters in the US, and others worldwide. Certainly, there will be a profound effect on art market/consumer sentiment.

As art auctioneers, with customers world-wide, and an auction scheduled for shortly after the election, our question is:

“Trump Vs. Hillary: Which is Better for the Art Market?”

To get the answer to this question, we sent a SURVEY to our client base of thousands of art collectors, galleries, and art professional worldwide. We asked which candidate would be better and which market categories would benefit most from either Clinton or Trump.

Here are the answers we received:

QUESTION: “Trump Vs. Hillary: Which is Better for the Art Market?”

SURVEY ANSWER: 53% said Hillary Clinton would be better for art prices.

QUESTION: “Which election winner (Hillary or Trump) would cause you to STOP buying art for 6 months or more?”

SURVEY ANSWER: 40% Said “Neither would affect their market activity”. 30% of respondents said a Trump win would make them stop buying, and 30% said Hillary in would  cause them to stop buying.

More interestingly, we posed the question:

“Which art market category would benefit from a Trump or Clinton Presidency?”

Choices: American Paintings (Pre-War) - Impressionist/Modern - Contemporary- Old Masters/19th Century - Latin Art - Russian Art - Middle Eastern Art - Asian Art.

Interestingly, the consensus was that a Trump presidency would most benefit American Paintings (Pre-War) (52%) and Russian Art (37%) followed by Impressionist/Modern (28%).

A Hillary Clinton presidency would be most beneficial to Contemporary Art (50%) and Impressionist/Modern (42%). Only 2% of respondents said Russian Art prices would benefit from Hillary.

Our “take away” from this survey:

  1. Trump win would have very strong impact on Russian Art prices (which have been crushed by 35-50% in past 3 years), and would benefit Pre-War American Paintings, and more traditional art.
  2. Hillary win would keep Russian Art prices depressed, while Contemporary and other international markets would keep status quo.

No matter who wins the Presidency, art collectors will be the real winners at Carlyle’s next auction, November 17 at www.carlyle-auctions.com. This online-only auction will  feature nearly 300 lots of fresh-to-the-market paintings, sculpture, prints & multiples.

A highlight of the auction will be nearly 100 lots of Russian paintings and antique Icons from the 18th & 19th centuries. In the event of a Trump win, collectors and dealers with an eye towards investment upside, should pay close attention to this exciting auction.
