Alaleh Ostad, Red Dreams, Oil on Canvas, 72''x 60''

The inspiration for Alaleh Ostad’s paintings can be found in nature’s beauty, but as her career has progressed the way in which that inspiration is realized has changed.  Having long painted watercolor landscapes, Ostad was encouraged by an art historian friend to make her images abstract, a shift that she says let her “paint my feelings and not my thinking.” While she will often take a photo of a particular spot she connects with it, her goal is not to simply duplicate the look of the scene. Rather, it is to translate that connection into an image that communicates the essence of the landscape.

Working in oil on canvas, Ostad employs many skills in her work. Her background in sculpture helps her bring the three-dimensional aspect of each painting to life, as well as to create a dynamic sense of texture. The daughter of a prominent calligrapher, she incorporates the swirling lines and precise meanings of that form into her images, giving them a clarity and openness that pulls the viewer in. The artist lives and works in New York City
