Robert Longo, Study of the Capitol, charcoal and ink on vellum, 2012. $60,000
Swann Galleries

Robert Longo's 2012 Study of the Capitol, a highly-detailed charcoal and ink on vellum, and a 1960s work by Jesús Rafael Soto, Jaí-Alai Series, Multiples I-V, both sold for $60,000 at Swann Galleries in New York on Nov. 12.

The Soto multiples, from 1969, achieved an auction record, far exceeding their estimate of $5,000-8,000.

Andy Warhol screenprints and a hand-colored lithograph fetched the sale's following four top prices. Leading the Warhols was Mao, a color screenprint from 1972, which brought $46,800.

Swann's contemporary art sale brought a total $1,739,885 with buyer’s premium. Of 330 lots offered, 263 sold, for an 80% sell-through rate by lot.

Todd Weyman, Swann Galleries Vice President and Director of Prints & Drawings, said, “By volume, this was Swann Auction Galleries’ largest sale of Contemporary Art ever, totaling more than $1.7 million with buyer’s premium. Prints and multiples performed robustly, as did original works, and we achieved record prices for a set of multiples by Jesús Rafael Soto, a set of three prints by Yves Klein, and for the Ten Works + Ten Painters portfolio.”
