Irving Marlatt (Am., 1860-1925), and an American rococo carved mahogany half tester bed, circa 1850-1860, stamped “C. Lee” are star lots in Crescent City Auction Gallery’s March 24th and 25th sale.

The important two-day estates auction will be held in Crescent City’s showroom, located at 1330 St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans. Offered will be more than 1,000 quality lots, headlined by the estate of John “Peter” Eaves, plus numerous other prominent local and Southern estates. The Saturday, March 24th session will begin at 9 am and on Sunday at 10 am. Both times are Central.

Featured will be period American, French and English furniture, original artwork (to include paintings by New Orleans and other regional artists), a selection of Russian icons (including The Virgin of Kazan and The Virgin of Tikhvin), silver, a wide array of jewelry (to include diamonds, rubies, sapphires, tanzanites, emeralds, alexandrite and South Seas pearls), bric-a-brac and more.

The late 18th / early 19th century Portrait of George Washington painted in the manner of Edward Savage is a beautiful oil on canvas rendering that measures 25 inches by 20 inches (est. $3,000-$5,000). The American Indian-themed work by H. Irving Marlatt is also an oil on canvas, signed and dated (“1915”) lower right, and measures 37 ½ inches by 27 ½ inches (est. $1,500-$2,500).

The mid-19th century American rococo carved mahogany half tester bed stamped “C. Lee” is truly magnificent, at 110 inches tall, 66 inches wide and 75 ½ inches deep (est. $2,000-$4,000). Also, an American Federal Revival carved mahogany four-poster bed from the late 19th century, isn’t quite as large but is still impressive at 78 inches tall by 74 inches deep (est. $1,000-$2,000).

Lots expected to attract keen bidder interest are a lovely and superb Liverpool creamware pitcher (or jug), circa 1795-1818, just 6 ½ inches in height (est. $1,000-$2,000); a 19th century Sevres-style porcelain and bronze 6-light chandelier, 30 inches tall (est. $600-$1,200); and a gorgeous early 20th century Turkish Oushak rug, 12 feet 9 inches by 16 feet 2 inches (est. $2,000-$3,000).

Original artwork by New Orleans and regional Southern artists will be led by an oil on canvas marine painting by John Kover (Baton Rouge, La., 1910-1988), titled Schooner in Rough Seas, artist signed (est. $2,500-$4,500); and a 1989 oil on canvas by Martin Laborde (New Orleans, b. 1943), titled I Held Her as She Thought of the White Cloud of Levitation (est. $1,000-$2,000).

The category continues with a 20th century mixed media artwork by George Valentine Dureau (New Orleans, 1930-2014), titled Nude Afro-American Man, signed lower center and 39 inches by 30 ¼ inches (est. $600-$900). Also sold will be an American School oil on canvas titled The Paddlewheeler Utica, possibly done by Samuel Stanton (N.Y., 1870-1912) (est. $800-$1,200).

Fine period French furniture – a staple at most Crescent City estate auctions – will include a circa 1800 French provincial Louis XV-style inlaid oak armoire, handsome and stately at 87 inches tall by 70 inches wide (est. $1,500-$2,500); and a Louis XV-style carved cherry and elm sideboard, also made around 1800, 40 ½ inches tall by 62 ½ inches wide (est. $1,000-$1,500).

Also offered will be mid-19th century French provincial Louis XV-style carved inlaid walnut vaisselier, 89 inches in height by 58 ½ inches wide, estimated to command $1,000-$1,500; and an early 20th century French Louis XV-style ormolu mounted inlaid mahogany bombe bowfront marble-top commode, 37 inches tall by 46 ½ inches wide, which should reach $1,000-$1,500.

Not to be overlooked is a 19th century French provincial Louis XV-style carved cherry farmhouse table, substantial at 78 ½ inches wide by 28 ¾ inches deep (est. $1,500-$2,500). From England is an early 20th century Victorian-style mahogany bookcase cupboard, monumental at 96 ½ inches tall by 85 ½ inches wide. The piece carries a very reasonable pre-sale estimate of $1,200-$1,800.

American furniture will feature a pair of lots with identical estimates of $800-$1,200. The first is an American rococo Revival carved walnut marble-top console table from the mid-19th century, attributed to the renowned cabinet maker Thomas Brooks. The second is an American Federal carved mahogany ormolu mounted marble-top library table, crafted around the early 19th century.

Decorative accessories will be led by a pair of 19th century Royal Vienna chargers, titled Mars and Venus and The Temptation, each one 12 ½ inches in diameter (est. $1,500-$2,500); and two large American carved gilt and gesso wood eagles, crafted in the 19th century, one 36 inches tall by 23 inches wide and the other 33 inches tall by 20 inches wide (each one est. $1,000-$2,000).

The short list of expected top lots concludes with two beautiful items, each one expected to hit $1,000-$2,000. The first is an early 19th century American Federal inlaid mahogany tall case clock, stately at 95 inches tall. The other is a 19th century Chinese School watercolor fresco painting titled Three Beauties Amongst the Clouds, 32 inches in height by 21 ¼ inches wide.
