Artifacts from the Archives: Previously Unpublished Art
The Edward Gorey House museum, located on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, opens it's 15th season with an exhibition of artwork produced by illustrator and author Edward Gorey (1925-2000). The exhibition Artifacts from the Archives displays works on paper and other media that have, until now, lay quietly in the famously eccentric's archive in Manhattan. Highlighted are three of Gorey’s unpublished works: The Angel, The Automobilist, and Eighteen Others (to be published later this year), his unfinished books Poobelle (-- or, The Guinea-Pig’s Revenge) [nd] and The Interesting List [nd].
About Edward Gorey
Edward St. John Gorey was born in Chicago in 1925, and is reknown for 'The Gashlycrumb Tinies' (1963), his animation designs for the opening credits of the PBS television series Mystery! and Tony award-winning set and costume designs for Broadway's Dracula (1977). Gorey published his first book 'The Unstrung Harp' in 1953 and another hundred titles over the next four decades. His unique style using cross-hatched pen and ink evokes a stark Edwardian world, combined with a rich and often dark humor, defines nearly all his work.
Artifacts from the Archives: Rare, Never-Seen, Hardly-Ever Seen & Rediscovered Works by Edward Gorey runs from April 15 through December 31, 2016.
Spring Hours (April 15-July 3): Thursday-Saturday 11am to 4pm, Sundays noon-4pm.
