How would the world change if everyone said “Hi” to a complete stranger? duplicate. until response., a group concept exhibition organized by Laris Kreslins attempts to answer this question by sharing original artwork with individuals across the U.S. randomly sourced from public phone books. The show opens on February 7 at Hooloon Art in Philadelphia’s Old City.
“I was inspired by balloon release projects that elementary school would do in the 1980s. Students would release a balloon with a note and the school’s address attached in hopes that someone would find it and write back. Sometimes hundreds of balloons were released at once. In a digital world, we’re so used to immediate responses and sometimes there is a lack of surprise. I am hoping to capture some of whimsy and provoke responses from the recipients with this experimental ‘analog’ project,” said curator Laris Kreslins.
More than 25 participating artists from around the world created print work no larger than 18 x 24 inches along with a duplicate. One copy was then mailed to an unsuspecting recipient with a letter explaining the project and encouraging feedback on it. On February 7, the artist's version of the print along with any comments from those who received works will be displayed alongside each other at Hooloon.
All prints will be available for purchase.
