Dem's Philosophy Expressed in Historic Antique Coverlets at FISHERHERITAGE

The phrase Stronger Together and other positive sentiments espoused during the Democratic Convention reflect a long held national philosophy as expressed earlier in our history through the corner blocks of antique jacquard coverlets.

In the inventory of Laura Fisher's FISHER HERITAGE are such affirmations of citizens working together as "E Pluribus Unum", "United We Stand" and "Agriculture and Manufactures are the Foundations of American Independence" woven into the coverlets' signature corner blocks as a prominent design feature.

E PLURIBUS UNUM coverlet

These weavings in wool and cotton proudly proclaim basic American beliefs and were a lure to attract buyers to the work of particular weavers. The coverlets are usable on either side and their slogans legible on both - either the red or indigo wool face, or the cotton face with white predominates and the background and the design elements are patterned in the color. Dating from the 1840s-1850s, each in excellent condition, their usefulness likely will continue for another 150+ years thanks to their superb construction, fine materials and their laudable durability. Both the coverlets and these philosophies have stood the test of time.

Three coverlets with such corner blocks are in Fisher's inventory now for purchase:

E PLURIBUS UNUM, woven for Maria Russell in 1853, attributed to Harry Tyler of New York State in dark dark indigo in a distinctive ribbed weave

UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL, a rare highly collectible jacquard woven with the figure of George Washington on horseback and patriotic slogans, in red and white, from the New York State workshop of James Cunningham or a colleague who shared this distinctive design draft (one quarter and corner shown);

AGRICULTURE AND MANUFACTURES ARE THE FOUNDATION OF OUR INDEPENDENCE, an indigo and white coverlet with eagles and other patriotic symbols, attributed to New York State's James Alexander.

These great coverlets have been published in the Checklist of American Coverlet Weavers (Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Museum, Williamsburg, Va) and other books that thoroughly research the important history of 19th century coverlet production in the U.S.
