Clarke Auction Gallery will showcase the best of artistic design at its auction on Sunday, June 2, at 10 am, ranging from fine paintings by Jared French and E.H. Potthast to art objects and sculptural works by Tiffany Studios, Pablo Picasso, George Nakashima and Tom Otterness.

The auction will include a number of fine and important pieces of art, sterling and jewelry, Asian arts, midcentury and decorative arts, highlighting original paintings from old masters to contemporary artists as well as Oriental carpets, bronzes, lighting, Continental and American furniture, and more. The sterling and jewelry selection will feature flatware, tea sets, sterling accessories, diamond jewelry, gold jewelry, and designer jewelry. Midcentury offerings will feature American and Italian designers from the 1950s to contemporary manufacturers.

“The auction is deep in artwork by blue chip artists but we have so much more than just paintings and sculpture,” said owner and auctioneer Ronan Clarke. “Good artistic design runs throughout the entire sale from a fine ceramic piece by Picasso and a trestle table by George Nakashima to antique garden sculpture, fine jewelry and more.”

Headlining the fine art category will be two works by Jared French (American, 1905-1987), who was renowned for his egg tempera paintings: a tempera on canvas laid to Masonite depicting three male figures ($30/50,000), signed, 47 by 43 ¼ inches; and a

bronze with patinated coloring, “The Fat Man,” circa 1958, 9 ½ by 5 ½ by 20 ½  inches. Both artworks come from the collection of the late Jon F. Anderson, who was quite active in the New York arts scene and often served as an artist’s model, working for many well-known painters, photographers and sculptors.

Bronzes and paintings go hand in hand here and highlighting the auction are an Edward Henry Potthast (American, 1857-1927) oil on board of a coastal landscape ($6/9,000) signed, 12 by 16 inches, and a Tom Otterness (American, b 1952) bronze depicting two figures (probably a parent and child) ($6/9,000), 1986, signed and dated on base, No. 3 from an edition of 3. Coming out of a New York City collection, the piece measures 13 ¼ by 3 by 11 ¼ inches.

The parade of designer names down the auction block continues with a pair of Tiffany Studios Turtleback tile wall sconces ($8/10,000) from a Westchester collector’s home, having s8 ½ -inch wide shades with the sconces measuring 12 inches overall. Furniture master George Nakashima is represented with a traditional trestle table ($5/7,000) with a book-matched top, also from the Anderson collection, 60 ½ by 33 by 28 inches.

Highlighting decorative arts will be a Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) 1956 Madoura convex wall plaque, “Plongeurs,” ($4/6,000) having a 7 ¼-inch diameter, and a fine set of four dore bronze figural 2-arm sconces ($3/5,000).

The sterling silver offerings here are equally notable and range from a 116-piece Georg Jensen Bernadotte flatware service ($6/9,000), totalling 141 troy ounces, to a five-piece Tiffany & Co tea service with tray ($4/6,000) comprising a teapot, coffee pot, creamer, covered sugar, and waste vessel, pattern no. 6350, with floral and scroll decoration.

Jewelry offerings include a large Italian 18K gold link bracelet ($2,5/3,500) made up of three large infinity links with Florentine finish separated by polished 18K yellow gold links, 8 ½ inches overall length.

Just in time for summer, garden antiques will also be on offer, led by a large and impressive antique marble fountain ($3/5,000) and a striking pair of antique marble columns ($3/5,000).

Rounding out the auction are a Steinway & Sons piano, serial # 183028, which belonged to artist Paul Cadmus and comes out of Anderson’s estate ($3/5,000), a set of six Gustav Stickley Mission oak chairs # 348.5 & 348.5A ($2/3,000) and an album of Japanese woodblock prints including Chikanobu ($2/4,000), with one side of the book mounted with triptychs including Russo-Japanese prints and images from Japanese myths and scenes from history.
