Sales at Brunk Auctions totaled over $1.9 million during the course of their three-day catalog sale from September 15-17. Both European and American paintings achieved exceptional results, with strong prices in Chinese as well. The regional auction house achieved these results by reaching a broad international audience.
The Reception, an elaborate interior scene by the Italian artist Arturo Ricci, sold for $96,000, and was the top-selling lot in the auction. The genre painting features eleven figures actively engaging one another and was previously held at Richard Green Gallery in London.
Other successful European paintings include:
- An 18th Century Venetian School painting of the Bacino San Marco on Ascension Day selling for $84,000.
- A 17th Century Italian School painting of St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata sold for $78,000.
- Cleopatra and Mark Antony at the Funeral Bier of Julius Caesar, an 1878 work by French Neoclassical artist Lionel Royer, selling for $43,200.
American paintings received exceptional results throughout, and were led by Taos School artist Eanger Irving Couse. His work, entitled The Hunter’s Return, sold for $72,000. The painting was formerly part of the Collection of Valley National Bank in Arizona.
The Cooling Stream, a portrait of four dogs by Percival Rosseau, sold for $59,000. It descended through the family of Samuel G. Allen after being commissioned in 1919.

- A 2005 painting of two ballerinas by Stephen Scott Young selling for $21,600
