When German abstract artist Sargam Griffin did a review of her stunningly complex paintings on birch panel not long ago, she realized many were long and narrow like doors. A concept was born and on October 2, Griffin will unveil a series of ArtDoors™ in a solo show at Ceres Gallery in Chelsea.

ArtDoors™ are fine works of art painted on functional doors. They can be commissioned as originals or as an artist edition. (Interestingly, the latter, which begin at a price point lower than the originals, become unique works of art that reflect the artist’s fine touch after she creates the basic painting.) 

The doors’ artistic appeal stems from Griffin’s technique of layering as many as forty layers of fine pigment, silver leaf and epoxy resin to create swirling eddies of movement that resonate with clarity and light. It is a technique evolved over an art career of more than twenty-five years.

To satisfy her own need to create “truthful, real works with depth,” and meet the desires of collectors, homeowners and decorators, Griffin produces each door individually.  “There are no short cuts,” she states. The artistic process can take up to two months for an artist edition ArtDoor™ to as many as four months for a completely original ArtDoor™.

“People will remember this,” Griffin states. “The doors carry an emotional impact.”

On a practical level, each ArtDoor™ is made from environmentally friendly, solid core wood. The doors can be made to hinge, pivot or slide. They can be customized with metal edges and kick plates.

When Sargam Griffin’s exhibition of ArtDoors™ opens October 2nd at Ceres Gallery, 547 West 27th Street, New York City, collectors, designers and architects will marvel at the tall wooden canvases that blend art and architecture.
