This selection of Americana offers material for both seasoned and new collectors and will include country painted furniture, lighting, English ceramics, historical blue Staffordshire, Mason’s ironstone, American stoneware, textiles, and American classical furniture.
An important American quilt (ca. 1850) has a Zachary Taylor printed backing which covers the entire backside of the 83.5" x 84" quilt. The backing is repeated print of General Taylor at the Battle of Resaca de la Palma during the Mexican War. He is depicted astride his horse, "Whitey", with palm tree borders around the battle scene. The front displays a “Caroline Lily” pattern, in red and green on white, alternating with solid blue blocks. (Estimate: $1,000-2,000).
Furniture offerings throughout the course of the day will include a Kentucky Federal tall case clock, (1815-1825). A mix of mahogany veneer, cherry, and poplar make this a striking piece while the brass movement features a decorated dial and ship dial arch wheel. The inside of the case door has a pencil-written repair history, beginning with A.M. Pesham in Owen County in 1870. (Estimate: $2,000-4,000). If blue catches your eye, you won’t want to miss the American Chippendale decorated blanket chest from the early 19th century. The chest is made of pine with original blue decoration and is expected to fetch $800-1,200. A late 18th century Pennsylvania Chippendale tall chest of drawers is sure to drawer bidder’s attention and carries a presale estimate of $2,000-4,000. A Canadian classical card table by Thomas Nisbet (St. John, New Brunswick, 1820-1840) features a flip-and swivel-top table on rope turned legs. Nisbet (1777-1850) was a prolific maker in the city of St. John, importing mahogany from Jamaica, exported furniture to other cities, and operated a wareroom that offered a variety of domestic and imported goods. (Estimate: $300-600).
Additional highlights of the sale include an historical blue Staffordshire plate with portrait medallions of Jeffers and Clinton over the New York City Hotel, with "View of the Aqueduct Bridge at Little Falls". The platter will cross the block with an estimate of $1,000-2,000. Another historical blue Staffordshire platter from England, 1st half-19th century of Esplanade & Castle Garden, NY should bring $600-1,200. Havell, London, 1832 is expected to fetch $1,500-2,500. A Navajo rug which is possibly Red Mesa features an intricate design with orange and green accents; the rug is expected to bring $1,000-2,000.
