The Demuth Museum is pleased to announce our next exhibition, A Formal Realist: The Works of John Dubrow, to open on March 1. John Dubrow has been pursuing his endeavor of painting for over thirty years. This exhibition and accompanying catalog will feature paintings from the start of Dubrow’s career in the 1980s through his most current work. Demuth Museum Executive Director Anne M. Lampe notes that “this mid-career retrospective is the first exhibition to bring together an overview of Dubrow’s work. This artist, much like Charles Demuth, chooses realistic and identifiable subject matter but constructs his paintings in an intricate manner developed by, in Dubrow’s case, multiple streams of influence, resulting in powerful images of the everyday.”
The exhibition will explore Dubrow’s continual engagement with balancing his faithfulness to the motif with the abstract nature of his painting. It is in the balance of these two currents that Dubrow achieves such fresh and contemporary paintings that reward continued observation. The exhibit surveys urban scenes of New York City, landscapes made during travels abroad, as well as self-portraits from throughout his career that will serve to examine the development of Dubrow’s artistic style. While Dubrow is a student of Old Master paintings, he also utilizes the improvisatory nature and physicality in the act of painting that is drawn from the Abstract Expressionist painters. Recently, Dubrow has incorporated use of an iPad for preliminary sketches and our exhibition will highlight this timely use of technology.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, March 1, 2013 from 5-8 p.m. in conjunction with First Friday festivities in Lancaster. The artist will be in attendance at the opening.
Regular Museum Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 10-4 & Sunday, 1-4.
