Lancaster, PA – The Lancaster Museum of Art will kick off the 2017 year with a special exhibition of a gift of art works from the collection of Timothy B. Stauffer.  A Lancaster native, Stauffer is bequeathing the works in this exhibit as well as more to the newly merged Demuth Museum and Lancaster Museum of art. Anne M. Lampe Executive Director and Chief Curator notes, “this gift comes a prescient moment for the newly formed “One Museum, Two Locations.”  With the greater breadth of our mission we are reforming our ideas about our collections and Stauffer’s gift which varies from glass, to prints to paintings to textiles opens new avenues of gathering together a superb collection of fine art for Lancaster.  

Stauffer is the former owner of “Recent Works” Gallery, which was on North Queen Street from 1982 until 1986. After he closed the gallery, Stauffer moved on to Paris and then New York as a dealer. He has spent years assembling a rich and varied collection which will be donated to the museum. Artists represented in the collection include Lancaster’s David Brumbach, C.X. Carlson and Luigi Rist as well as nationally and internationally recognized artists including Leonard Baskin, Paul Cadmus, Alexander Calder, John Chamberlain, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Rockwell Kent, Florence Knoll, Walt Kuhn, and Mies van der Rohe, among others.

“While this collection has depth and breadth of artists and subject matter, it reveals a cohesion of Tim’s aesthetic that is essential to any collector,” explains Anne M. Lampe, Executive Director and Chief Curator. “This exhibit will not only give us a preview of the works coming in to the museum’s collection but also an opportunity to explore Stauffer’s journey of creating a collection and growing it over a period of years.”

The exhibit, on view from February 4 to 26, 2017, will feature paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and printmaking. An opening reception will be held at the Lancaster Museum of Art on Friday, February 3, 2017 from 5-8 p.m.
