Twelve prints by David Hockney featured in the auction are fine examples that span his career, working collaboratively with celebrated printers and workshops as well as experimenting on his own. They highlight the printmaking techniques he most embraced, as well as his most famous muses. They also illustrate the deep and enduring influence of Picasso since 1960, when the artist was 23 and attended the Picasso exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London.

One of the most celebrated and influential artists of the 20th century, David Hockney is well-known for his drawings, paintings, prints and photographs and he also made set designs. A brilliant draftsman, Hockney studied as a teenager in his hometown’s Bradford School of Art in Northern England and then at the Royal College of Art in London in the early 1960s. Despite the focus on abstraction at the time, Hockney remained a figurative artist while working in a wide range of mediums and exploring new technologies.

For Hockney, Los Angeles was love at first sight–the sunlight, beauty, vibrant colors, sense of freedom and endless possibilities. He moved there in 1964 and made Los Angeles his home for much of his life. Best known for sundrenched images of swimming pools, his work has captured the essence of the city like no other artist, and his artwork is more sought after now than ever. (Lots 58-69)

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), VASE DEUX ANSES HAUTES, Painted and partially glazed white ceramic vase, 1953. Height 15 1/4 inches; 387 mm. Est. $30,000-40,000. Lot 156.

The auction also features three large scale etchings by minimalist artist Richard Serra (Lots 182-184). These fine prints recall the monumental site-specific steel sculptures for which he is best known. Serra has worked closely with the printers at Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles over the years and developed unconventional printing techniques, such as working on the gravel in the parking lot next to Gemini to create texture. Sonny Rollins (Lot 183), is from the Rounds series of which each work is titled with the names of legendary jazz and blues musicians.

Additional highlights include works by Thomas Hart Benton, Winslow Homer, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman and Andy Warhol, among many others.
