NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of John Herzberg in On Earth and Elsewhere. The exhibition opens January 4 and runs through January 24, 2019 with an opening reception on Thursday, January 10 from 6-8 pm. Any art lover who enjoys thought-provoking artworks and meeting talented and interesting artists is encouraged to attend.
About the Artist
In his paintings, John Herzberg strives to liberate himself from analytical thinking and enter a state of creative flow. He is interested in accessing his creativity by way of the subconscious mind. Herzberg is an abstract painter, though his abstractions often refer to the concrete world. The painting Sidewalk Puddle, for example, could be viewed as an entirely abstract piece, or it could help to see a sidewalk puddle anew, as an entirely abstract, painterly “event.”
Although Herzberg has been interested in abstract art since childhood, he did not immerse himself in painting until he was twenty years old. He began with spray paint techniques, using whatever tools he could get his hands on, moving on to experimenting with acrylics and oils. Recently, he was diagnosed with a condition that causes persistent migraine aura. Herzberg suffers visual disturbances that vary in intensity from day to day, but remain present even when the headache pain is not. Through brush strokes and paint splatter, textures and depths, Herzberg shares his vision of the world and how he copes with it.

About the Exhibition
On Earth and Elsewhere unpacks the ramifications of human influence on the earth. Comprising ten artists, each work displays an image of humanity’s place in the surrounding cosmos. Taking as its point of departure different images humanity has had of itself across history, the exhibition offers something like a timeline of what humanity has accomplished, as well as what it stands to lose in the face of pressing realities like climate change.
