The Morris-Jumel Mansion is pleased to present “Boundless - The Women of the Mansion” an exhibition of site-specific, outdoor works created by award-winning artist Andrea Arroyo, during her Artist's Residency at the Morris-Jumel Mansion, the first of its kind for the museum. Visitors can engage with the artist as she works on-site through her residency from June 4-30, creating new pieces to be incorporated in the exhibition.

Inspired by the surrounding community, past inhabitants and history of Manhattan’s Oldest House, the artist will present a series of works integrated with the house’s façade and within the garden - utilizing the natural environment of plants, grass and other elements of the mansion’s outdoor grounds. One of the pieces, “Eliza’s Home,” situated on the front balcony of the museum is reactivating the exterior facade of the Mansion.

With “Boundless - The Women of the Mansion,” Arroyo creates a multi-level conversation, bridging local culture and history and connecting the experience of all women (from the Lenape Nation, the Colonial Era, the Harlem Renaissance and contemporary society including the most recent wave of immigrants who make upper Manhattan a vibrant community today.)

Arroyo has been exploring notions of identity, gender, class and social justice throughout her career. For the artist, the stories of the women who inhabited the Mansion mirror the struggles of women in contemporary society, who defy social norms and prejudice in order to achieve their goals.

A variety of public programs will be presented in conjunction with the exhibition, including “Live Art & Live Jazz with Jazz Legend Ms. Marjorie Eliot,” “Butterflies at the Mansion,” a family art workshop with live Mexican music, “Community Labyrinth” where visitors and members of the community will be invited to join the artist in the creation of a land art piece and “Artist at Work” sessions open to the public. The programming schedule will be posted weekly on the artist’s website.
