UNIX Gallery is pleased to present “Rigorismo” a survey exhibition of painting and mix media artworks by a preeminent group of Italian artists, who represent the genesis, progression and future of Spazialismo (Spatialism), founded by Lucio Fontana in the 1940s. “Rigorismo” will be on view at UNIX Gallery New York, 532 West 24th Street from March 5-March 29, 2015. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 5 from 6-8 pm.
The artists in the "Rigorismo" movement, like the artists in the German “Zero” movement, believed that they were creating a new beginning for art inspired by the rigor of the forms they created and by their relationship with space. “Rigorismo” is influenced by a philosophical language of existence, which as defined by Rene Descartes, is reducible to space and movement. The sixteen artists in the exhibition explore the limitations of color and form by interrupting defined artistic spaces through the manipulation of canvas, metal and other materials to create work out of space itself. By the use of innovative and materials and tools, the “Rigorismo” artists bring Spazialismo into a contemporary context.
