L'Eternel Printemps by Auguste Rodin, estimated at £500,000-700,000
Bonhams

Bonhams' February 4 Impressionist and Modern Art sale in London will feature:

Created at the height of Rodin's passionate love affair with the young Camille Claudel, L'Eternel Printemps is one of the French sculptor's most highly acclaimed works. Claudel, who was only 19 when she met Rodin in 1883, nearly 25 years his junior, was the subject of ardent love letters. The sculpture was first conceived in 1884, the same year that Rodin described himself in a letter to “My very dearest,” as “down on both knees before your beautiful body which I embrace.”

  • Morbidezze di Primavera (The Softness of Spring) by Giacomo Balla, estimated at £300,000-500,000.

Working as drawing master for the daughters of Count Caetano Lovatelli, Balla built a long and lasting relationship with the family. It was from their mansion in Tuscany that he created a sequence of works devoted to the transitions of the seasons between 1917 and 1920. Morbidezze di Primavera distills seasonal change into a synthesis of line, vibrant colour and abstract form. During this time, he also produced his iconic Manifesto del Colore, in which he outlined the groundbreaking aims of Futurism.

  • Le Petit Bougival (Little Bougival) by Alfred Sisley, estimated at £300,000-500,000.

Le Petit Bougival comes from a private collection and has not been seen in public for almost a century. First owned by J. B. Faure, the celebrated French opera singer and prominent art collector, it has since passed through some of the most prominent collections of its time. Depicting a summer's day at Bougival, the fashionable countryside area outside of Paris, the work features Sisley's signature shades of dusty blue, pale pinks and bursts of green combined with his expressive brushstrokes to display his characteristic tranquility.

  • Personnage, Oiseaux (Character, Birds) by Joan Miró, estimated at £200,000-300,000.
  • Eine Schwärmende (A Swarming) by Paul Klee, estimated at £120,000-180,000.
  • Variation et Contraste (Variation and Contrast) by Frantisek Kupka, estimated at £120,000-180,000.

"We're very excited to offer such a sensational line up," said India Phillips, Bonhams Head of Impressionist and Modern Art. "Each piece is so visually striking in its own way. Rodin's smooth, undulating lines in L'Eternel Printemps perfectly complement the erotic sensuality of the figures, while the explosion of colours in Morbidezze di Primavera brings an overwhelming sense of Balla's belief in the powerful harmony of nature."
