Loretta Kaufman’s handbuilt stoneware sculpture, “Quartet: Series YK”, has been selected for inclusion in the National Association of Women Artists’ 2018 Winter Small Works Exhibition in New York City during the month of February 2018. The exhibition is open to all NAWA members and non-members nationwide. This multi-media exhibition of 67 works includes sculpture, intaglio, watercolor, photography, oil and acrylic painting, soft pastels and mixed media.
The National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) is a not-for-profit, non-political, member supported organization of professional women in the fine arts. NAWA is based in New York City with chapters in Florida and Massachusetts. The organization was founded in 1889 by five innovative women seeking exhibition opportunities for gifted artists who had been denied participation in the prominently male-dominated art institutions of the time. It is the oldest women’s fine arts organization in the country.
Currently 800 women from across the US are juried members of the association. Luminaries affiliated with the organization have included Mary Cassatt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and Louise Nevelson. NAWA continues its long-standing tradition of supporting dynamic and relevant women artists all over the United States. Their mission is to promote culture and education of its members’ works in the visual arts through exhibition, educational programs, scholarships and awards.
The exhibition will take place at the National Association of Women Artists headquarters at 315 West 39th Street, Suite 508, New York City, from February 1st through the 27th. An opening reception will be held on February 15th between 5-7 pm in the NAWA Gallery. For more information and gallery hours please contact NAWA as www.thenawa.org or by phone at 212-675-1616.
About the Artist
In nearly five decades Nashville sculptor and painter, Loretta Kaufman, has produced 2D and 3D work in wood, fiber, metal, clay and paint. Nature and the natural world have always been the center of her art. When working with clay she often incorporates tears, rips and other surface treatments in her sculpture to express the energies and rhythms of the life around us. Loretta’s sculpture has been described as containing an interesting tension between symmetry and fluidity, with its raw unglazed surfaces and organic forms that undulate and teem with life. This March her sculpture will be represented with Carolina Bronze Sculpture at INDEX Dubai 2018, Dubai World Trade Center, UAE. Loretta’s paintings and sculptures have also been juried into numerous online exhibitions including Fusion Art’s “Elemental – Air, Fire, Earth, Water in 2015; “Waterscapes”, “Animal Kingdom”, “2nd Annual Figures & Faces” in 2016; and she won Honorable Mention awards in “Colors” in 2017 and “Women Artists” in January 2018.
