Faction Art Projects has announced a solo show of paintings by award-winning British artist Lisa Wright. In The Eyes of Each will be Wright’s most ambitious exhibition in New York.

In The Eyes of Each will present a series of oil paintings which Wright refers to as her ‘inner landscape’ series, figurative works that embody natural landscapes. Wright’s inner worlds encompass fauna, trees, birds, insects and sky. They draw our attention back to nature and remind us of our responsibility to protect Earth’s ecosystem.

Each of Wright’s distinctive subjects embodies a unique landscape that collectively represent growth and the protection of Earth for future generations. The subject in Luminous contains glowing skeletal insects that have emerged from various stages of metamorphosis, a visual metaphor for human development from child to adult. Similarly, Blossom Keeper with her poignant expression contains an abundance of flowers reflecting her own flourishing and development.

Silken is embellished with blue flora reminiscent of the traditional blue and white decoration of Chinese porcelain, delicate and fragile, while Song of Starlings figure contains trees and yet birds are absent. The title suggests an imagined bird song.

The figures of varying scale stand alone and out of context, they are transient and timeless. The careful balance of both figurative and abstract elements, along with a heightened and often sensual use of colour, emphasise the vibrant and contemporary nature of the work.

Wright says of her new work “In The Eyes of Each is inspired from fragments of poetry and text which relate to the themes in this new series of work. This work acknowledges everyone’s unique perspectives and how we see each other.”

Wright is recognised for her distinctive figurative paintings that explore the physical and emotional state of childhood and adolescence. Her work is informed by subtle references to historical painting. Abstract sensibilities are upheld by masterly draughtsmanship and painterly use of colour, liberal and seductive in its application and brushwork, enhancing the emotional impact of her often large scale works.

Art Critic Lizzy Lloyd summarised Wright’s paintings in her introduction to The Unversed, 2015. She says

“When Wright cedes total control of her image and her paint, the work begins to take hold of you not by its staged loveliness but by its ineffable strangeness.”

Since completing her post graduate studies at the Royal Academy Schools London in 1992,Wright’s paintings have been exhibited nationally and internationally with solo presentations in London, New York, Hong Kong, Basel and Miami. Notable awards include The NOA Prize,The Hunting Art Prize and the 2013 Threadneedle Prize. In 2012 Wright was invited to be an Academician of The Royal West of England Academy.

Wright’s appointment as the Royal Shakespeare Company artist in residence throughout the two year period of the RSC's acclaimed ‘Histories’ cycle of plays culminated in exhibitions at the Roundhouse Theatre as the plays were performed, and subsequently at the Royal Academy of Arts London. The work is held in many important private and corporate collections including Unilever, Linklaters and AstraZeneca.

Notes to editors: FACTION Art Projects

FACTION is a flexible collective, from the team behind the hugely successful Gallery 8 and Coates & Scarry in London, who have created a unique model for artists and gallerists to work together. FACTION addresses the changing market place and the erosion of the traditional art market, where galleries were gatekeepers for artists. FACTION redefines the relationships through unique collaborative projects, both curated in house, or by guest curators. FACTION provides artists with promotion and opportunity to access collectors and a wider audience, with all the support of a gallery but without the constraints of the traditional model.

Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 12 to 6 pm, and 12 – 4 pm on Sundays.
