About the Artist
Mexican photographer Aldebarán Solares is intrigued by the relationship between photography and memory. Solares observes that while today’s world is inundated with images, our understanding of photography as a medium that affects memory and desires has not necessarily grown.
In his “Umbral” (“Threshold”) series, he asks what it means to stand between remembrance and oblivion, and memory and the recorded image. To create what he calls the “vortex” in the middle of the photograph, Solares directed a beam of light at the surface of the photograph, obliterating a portion of the image.
