Cassera Arts Premiers in association with Foot of Main Gallery Proudly Present: Photography by Former Canadian Olympic Swimmer Brent Hayden.

Former Canadian Olympic Swimmer Brent Hayden has won 40 medals in international competition, including a Bronze in the London 2012 games. Now the athlete is stepping behind the lens for different view of the action.

Brent on retiring from swimming, “It’s been tough because you are going from looking at knowing exactly what you are going to do for the next four years, every single day, to suddenly not knowing what you are going to do when you wake up.”

Brent’s passion for photography started in high school where he took two photography courses. When swimming took it’s toll mentally on the athlete he used photography as an escape, his way of dealing with the stress of training. “If you have a bad day at training, its good to shut that part of your mind off, and photography helped me do that.”

According to Brent there are some parallels between photography and his days as a swimmer chasing gold for Canada and striving to be the best. “Photography in that sense was sort of the same thing because no matter how good I thought I was there was always mounds more that I could learn, especially as the technology grows. You can really push the limits of photography further and further. I really like shooting landscapes, creating something that you can’t actually see with the naked eye and turning it into a piece of art. That is why I like going into these minimalist landscapes with long exposure effects.”

In January Brent’s first exhibition of photography took place in his home town of Mission, BC,  at the Mission Art Center Gallery and continues with this exhibition at the Foot of Main Gallery curated by friend and international art dealer David Cassera of Cassera Arts Premiers.
