The contents of a nineteenth century Napa Valley stage coach stop are going to be sold in a live, on-site auction by Sacramento, Calif.-based Witherell’s Antiques and Fine Arts on September 6, 2014.
Opened in 1875, the Pope Valley stage coach stop had a saloon, hotel, restaurant, brewery, card room, post office and grocery.
Many of the items had not been touched since the store closed in 1971 when the current owner, Bradley Kilpatrick, retired.
“We’re so excited to be able to offer these unique items,” said Brian Witherell, Antiques Roadshow appraiser and owner of Witherell’s. “This is a unique opportunity to own a memento of a by-gone era.”
While the contents have just begun to be catalogued, antique advertising, slot machines and other gambling devices, firearms and mining equipment should be some of the highlights of the event.
The stage coach went to the mines in the Napa hills where quicksilver, gold and silver were found.
As a stage coach stop, the Pope Valley Store had everything anyone could need, including a telephone exchange and a radio station later.
An auto repair shop was added in 1912.
A former volunteer fire chief, Kilpatrick also is known in the area for dances, turkey shoots and other events he produced to raise funds for local organizations such as the Pope Valley 4-H Club, the local schools and the Pope Valley Volunteer Fire Department itself.
The on-site auction will be held Saturday September 6, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pope Valley Store, 5875 Pope Valley Road, Pope Valley, Calif.
Viewing will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
People must be present to bid.
There will be no phone or online bidding—unlike auctions today.
