WASHINGTON -  Weschler’s, DC's only auction house, will present for sale over 300 works of art, fine furniture, jewelry, silver, rugs and more in its Capital Collections sale on Fri., Sept. 16.  Bids will be accepted on site and online. 

 

The September auction has a strong selection of works on paper including a striking watercolor by the Mexican master Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991). Women Bathing ($20,000-$30,000) was a gift from the artist to the former Mexican Ambassador to the U.S. and to Japan, Raphael de la Colina. The ambassador was also the author of the catalogue for the 1963 Tamayo exhibition in Japan. The work is framed and signed by the artist.


Three unusual silhouette works by Swiss artist Louis David Saugy (1871-1953), rarely available  in the U.S., show scenes of Alpine life and activity through intricate paper cutting artistry. Each work is valued between $8,000-$12,000.

May Milton, the English dancer made famous by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, is captured by the artist in a colorful lithograph with a rare banjo player remarque ($8,000-$10,000). Other lithographs include works by George BellowsAlberto Giacometti, and René Magritte.

In JEWELRY offerings, a striking modern 18-karat and yellow-gold and diamond bracelet by Jean Schlumberger ($8,000-$12,000) is a highlight. Other fine jewelry in the sale includes a stunning 6.4-carat pear-shaped platinum solitaire diamond ring($30,000-$50,000); a platinum, blue sapphire and diamond ring ($8,000-$12,000); a14-karat white-gold solitaire diamond ring ($8,000-$12,000); and a charming 18-karat yellow-gold and blue sapphire 'Palm Tree' brooch from Tiffany & Co.($2,000-$4,000).

SILVER lots include a George IV silver covered soup tureen from London, 1820 ($6,000-$8,000) and a Gorham sterling covered soup tureen from Providence, dated 1871 ($4,000-$6,000).

FURNITURE highlights include a Chippendale dark stained mahogany slant-front secretary-bookcase ($15,000-$25,000) from Massachusetts, circa 1750-1770, and an unusual Tiffany Studios 'Jeweled Blossom' leaded glass and bronze table lampestimated at $5,000-$7,000.  

The public is welcome to view lots during exhibition hours prior to the sale: Sat. Sept. 10 from 9 a.m.-noon; Sun., Sept. 11 from 11 a.m-3 p.m.; and the following weekdays preceding the sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except Thurs., Sept. 15 when the preview will close at 2 p.m.) An auction catalogue is available for purchase.
