Lawrence Fine Art today announced its summer exhibition schedule, which will include a major retrospective of new and historic works by noted pop artist Marjorie Strider and an exhibition of nudes by "Lost Master" Arthur Pinajian. The gallery will inaugurate the summer season with and exhibition of works by Carol Sears, to open Thursday, May 22, with an opening reception Saturday, May 24.
"We continue to try and do our part to make the Hamptons an art destination and our gallery a destination for serious collectors," said gallery owner Howard Shapiro. "We are particularly proud to be showing Marjorie's work and that of acclaimed graffiti artist Crash One, but also work by light graffiti artist Vicki DaSilva, work by Sears, and a group show focusing on Imaginative Realism."
Shapiro said the gallery will also mount a special show focusing on the nudes of "Lost Master" Arthur Pinajian. "I continue to be amazed at the quality of this mid-century master," said Shapiro. Shapiro noted that 2014 is the 100-year anniversary of Pinajian's birth.
Australian-born, Los Angeles-based, Sears' work oscillates between compositional deliberation and what appears to be the happenstance accretion of strokes. Her work suggests that painting is most of all about possibility and evanescence. Sears moved to San Diego in 1965, where she worked in the art department of UC San Diego and came into contract with John Baldessari, Miriam Schapiro, Harold Cohen and Newton and Helen Harrison. She has shown extensively in the Los Angeles area.
The Strider show, which will open June 26, will be titled "The Second International Girlie Show". The title references the first show Strider ever received, at Pace Gallery in 1964, which was called "The First International Girlie Show." "Strider's contribution to the development of Pop Art is on a par with Wesselman, Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Wayne Thiebaud or any of the other important male artists of that era. However, being a woman, she received less notice than did they," said Shapiro.
The Crash One exhibition comes on the heals of a successful 2013 exhibition for acclaimed graffiti artist LA ROC and a popular graffiti art retrospective at the Museum of the City of New York titled "City as Canvas: Graffiti Art from the Collection of Martin Wong." "Graffiti art is popular, accessible and in the public eye," said Shapiro. "Graffiti artists have made art once again accessible to a whole new generation of art fans."
Imaginative, or Hyper-, Realism is a new direction for the gallery. "As ever, the tug of war between abstraction and realism continues," said Shapiro. "These artists are finding new ways to portray the world around us."
DaSilva's light graffiti builds on the gallery's 2013 successful first photography show "New York City Dolls" by Judy Mauer. "Photography is a medium we have pledged to support and show," said Shapiro.
The schedule is as follows:
Opening May 22: Work by Los Angeles abstract artist Carol Sears
Opening June 26: Marjorie Strider--Second International Girlie Show
Opening July 17 (West and East Galleries): Crash One and Arthur Pinajian: The Nudes
Opening August 7: Vicki DaSilva: Light Graffiti

Each show continues for three-four weeks.
