On November 16th, dozens of tribal objects from the Allan Stone collection will be offered at the New York branch of Sotheby's in the first of a two-part sale from Mr. Stone's vast collection of African, Oceanic, Indonesian, pre-Columbian and Native American art. In total the sale of more than 300 works is expected to exceed $20 million. Sotheby's is calling it the largest collection of African art ever to appear in the American market.
David A. Cassera, a New York Art tribal art dealer with locations in Washington State and Vancouver B.C. has been waiting for such a sale since he began his career.
"There are always Tribal art auctions in New York in May, which is why we choose to have the tribal art fairs during that time. Since I became a dealer there has never been a Sotheby's auction of African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian art in the winter months. I asked Heinrich Schweizer, head of African and Oceanic art for Sotheby's in New York about this four years ago. Heinrich explained to me that Sotheby's would only hold a sale in November if it was a collection of a "single owner". There had been no significant collections from a single owner until now."
Cassera who organizes New York Tribal Art Week decided immediately it would be a great opportunity to expand his brand to a winter addition. Cassera will hold a one week Tribal Art exhibition from November 10th-17th concurrent with the Allan Stone sale at Sotheby's located at a prestigious upper east side gallery space. He is encouraging other dealers to do the same during that time. Cassera's exhibition will be the only one of it's kind combining art from Africa, Oceania and the America's with original modern paintings by Picasso, Basquiat and others.
There will be a opening reception and regular hours as well as hours by appointment. For more information please contact info@newyorktribalart.com
