Cowan’s Auctions, Inc. will host their spring American Indian and Western Art Auction on April 10, 2015. The auction will be held in Cowan’s salesroom, in Cincinnati, OH, and will include fine selections of Western art, beaded and quilled items, Western plains pieces, tomahawks, clothing, basketry, pottery, dolls, blankets, pipes and more.

Highlighted in the sale will be a piece by Edgar Allen Payne, titled “Sierra Mountains,” estimated to bring anywhere between $20,000/30,000. Another painting by Olaf Wieghorst, titled “Cowboy’s Resting,” is estimated to bring anywhere between $15,000/20,000.  

Beaded items are expected to perform well in the sale. A Plateau Beaded Buffalo Hide Bandolier is estimated at $20,000/30,000, a Sioux Beaded and Quilled Hide Cradle from the Fraser Douglass Collection is estimated at $10,000/20,000, and a Crow Beaded Hide Rifle Scabbard is expected to fetch $15,000/25,000.

Photography will be up for auction in the April 10th sale. A Collection of Boudoir Photographs by Ben Wittick (1845-1903) are expected to fetch $6,000/8,000, an Orotone by Edward Curtis, titled “Homeward,” is estimated to bring $4,000/6,000, and a Silver Gelatin Photograph by Karl Moon, titled “Navajo Boy,” is estimated at $3,500/4,500.

Pottery, sculpture and bronzes are also featured in the sale. A Roxanne Swentzel Clay Sculpture is estimated at $5,000/7,000, a Zuni Hilili Katsina Doll is expected to fetch $8,000/10,000, a Zuni Hawikuh Glaze Polychrome Pottery Bowl is estimated at $4,000/5,000, and a Helen Shupla Melon Jar is expected to bring $3,000/5,000.

Additional featured items in the sale include an Eastern Sioux Quilled Calumet Pipe Stem with Catlinite Bowl which is estimated at $6,000/8,000, a Western Plains Pipe Tomahawk with Tacked Horse Decoration is estimated at $10,000/15,000, and a Bronze by Allan Houser is estimated at $10,000/15,000.
