R & Company, New York, Presents Brazil Modern, November 10, 2015 – January 9, 2016; Opening Reception: Tuesday, November 10, 6-8pm

R & Company announces Brazil Modern, an exhibition highlighting important Brazilian furniture designs, textiles and ephemera from the 20th century. The exhibition opens to the public on Tuesday, November 10th, with a reception from 6-8 pm, and closes on January 9th, 2016.

Brazil Modern explores the rich and diverse designs that came out of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo between the late 1940s and early 1970s. Designers highlighted will include Lina Bo Bardi, Carlo Hauner, Martin Eisler, Roberto Burle Marx, Oscar Niemeyer, Sergio Rodrigues, Joaquim Tenreiro, Jorge Zalsupin and Jose Zanine. Archival material on view will include original drawings by Joaquim Tenreiro and Sergio Rodrigues, as well as rarely seen interior design publications from the mid 20th century.

Of the exhibition, R & Company principal Zesty Meyers says, “People are aware of the incredible design dynasties from countries like Italy, France and Denmark. Brazil is one of the last great traditions we are still in the process of discovering. The idea that many of these designers are not yet internationally recognized, bold-faced names in the canon of modern design is amazing considering the body of work they produced, which is exceptional in form, material and craftsmanship.”

Brazil Modern exemplifies the depth and breadth of R & Company’s collection of historical Brazilian design. It is the gallery’s sixth and latest exhibition devoted to sharing and championing work from the region. Past exhibitions have shed light on the contributions of individual designers, including Joaquim Tenreiro and Sergio Rodrigues.

The exhibition will offer visitors the unique opportunity to see many works that will appear in the forthcoming publication of the same name, available from R & Company and Monacelli Press in early 2016.

R & Company is a gallery committed to historic and contemporary design exhibition and education. Founded by Zesty Meyers and Evan Snyderman in 1997, it presents groundbreaking exhibitions and publications of both historic significance and emerging talent. R & Company represents a diverse program of international design from North America, South America, Europe, and Asia, produced between 1945 and today. R & Company has an extensive archive, library, and collection that chronicle the rapid ascent of the design market. In addition to the exhibition program, gallery, and publications, Meyers and Snyderman contribute widely to publications and lecture frequently about design. www.r-and-company.com
