(BOUCKVILLE, N.Y.) – A trove of German Third Reich military relics acquired by an American G.I. in World War II, a Nazi Luftwaffe regiment standard and an Imperial Russian Garde du Corps officer’s helmet made between 1900-1917 are a few of the expected top lots in Mohawk Arms’ Auction #70, a live and Internet sale already online and slated to end Dec. 6-7.

The auction, featuring hundreds of military items from multiple wars and generations, will be held in Mohawk Arms’ Bouckville gallery (located on Route 20 in central New York state, not far from Interstates 90 and 81) as well as online, at www.LiveAuctioneers.com or the Mohawk Arms website, www.MilitaryRelics.com. Phone and absentee bids will also be taken.

Sold will be Imperial helmets, medals and badges, Third Reich uniforms and other items from Nazi Germany (to include Adolf Hitler silverware), uniforms, swords, bayonets, daggers, knives, antique firearms (to include an M1808 Evans flint contract, an M1860 Colt revolver, a Potts & Hunt rifle and an M1861 Springfield), headgear insignia books, steins and other items.

The G.I.-acquired trove of Third Reich relics was sent back home during the war by Tec. 5 Robert W. Albro, an orderly and typist who took part in the campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Anzio, France and Germany. Many of his souvenirs were described in letters he mailed home and which fortunately were never thrown away. These letters will be included with the lots sold.

One of the lots is a German canteen (which was half-filled with cognac upon the German soldier’s surrender), a Second Class Iron Cross in excellent condition, a surrender certificate and two photos (opening bid $250). Another is a display board mounted with a Luftwaffe Salver award for distinguished combat service, a Silver German Cross, a War Merit First Class with Swords, a Luftwaffe Transport Clasp with pendant and an Eastern Peoples Medal (est. $18,500).

The Luftwaffe signal regiment standard features an exquisitely embroidered large silver bullion relief eagle within a large bullion relief oak leaf wreath. The flag’s background consists of four angular gold-brown silk panels dissected by white silk areas bordered in black. Each corner white area has a separately sewn black German swastika bordered in silver bullion wire. The reverse shows swastikas as well. The superb 4 foot by 4 foot flag should realize $20,000.

The Imperial Russian Garde du Corps officer’s helmet (one of two in the sale) is similar in shape to a Prussian helmet, only the gilt finished skull is higher and the lobstertail has a more radical, upswept look. The helmet being sold, which is quite rare and in excellent condition, has a silvered 8-pointed starburst that holds an enameled double-headed eagle with the Cross of St. Andrew. A shield showing St. George slaying a dragon is on the eagle’s chest (est. $15,500).

A pair of Civil War-era items should both do well. The first is a Confederate used M1860 Army Colt revolver with three-screw frame. The well-worn gun shows pitting and an excellent darkened age finish. The “New York” address on the barrel can be read, but the cylinder scene is worn away. The brass trigger guard is numbered “108074,” as are the other parts. The weapon comes with a well-worn period holster and classic “snake” buckle and belt. It should hit $1,500.

The other is an M1850 presentation grade Union officer’s staff and field sword, expected to command $6,000. The sword is a fine example (dated “1861” and with the reverse engraved “US”). Accompanying the sword is a tin chest, stenciled with “C. A. Earnest, US Army” and containing a black leather Cavalry belt with sword hangers and brass eagle buckle, a Civil War officer’s red dress sash with a pair of tassels, and a single U.S. brass spur with a pointed rowel.

A grouping of material pertaining to Gen. Lt. Dr. Franz Beyer, commander of Nazi Germany’s famed 44th Infantry Division during World War II, can be expected to hammer for $8,100. The trove includes a four-pocket doeskin-material tunic, Gen. Beyer’s “Soldbuch” (with his medical history, orders, decorations, etc.), a 1939 hunting license with photo plus an “end of hunt” photo showing Beyer with a deer “trophy,” and photos, including his daughter’s wedding.

Another archive will also be sold – pertaining to John J. Manning, Jr., a U.S. G.I. with the 754th/713th Tank Battalion during World War II (est. $250). The grouping includes a jacket with collar discs, ribbon bars, stripes and shoulder patches; a tan shirt with shoulder and rank insignia, plus Manning’s name; three overseas caps (one olive drab, two tan); and two tan neckties and a single dog tag. The 713th was the only armored flame-throwing battalion in the Army in WWII.

The auction also contains a Saxon Carabinier helmet and various Prussian helmets, a U.S. Krag bowie bayonet, Moro knives, Third Reich daggers (SS, SA, Red Cross Sr., etc.), swords (U.S., German Imperial and Third Reich, Austrian, Russian, Samurais, Talwars, etc.), German Nazi uniforms (SS, SD, SS women’s, etc.), various medals and combat badges and much more.

Previews will be held at the Mohawk Arms gallery, on Route 20 in Bouckville, every Monday through Friday leading up to Dec. 6, from 9-5 (EST), and on sale days (Dec. 6-7), from 8-9 a.m. The first gavel will come down both days at 9 a.m. A buyer’s premium, which can range from 10 percent-17.5 percent depending on the final price, will be applied to all purchases.
