WATERBURY, CT – The Mattatuck Museum announces the fall exhibition, Walker Evans American Photographs, that will be on view from September 18 to December 31, 2022. Walker Evans American Photographs celebrates the photographer’s landmark solo exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1938. A leading figure in the history of American documentary photography, Walker Evans is today considered one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. In the 1930s, Evans traveled extensively throughout the Eastern United States, creating a collective photographic portrait of the region during a decade of profound transformation.

Walker Evans American Photographs is based on an exhibition originally organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York and organized by Sarah Hermanson Meister, former Curator, with Tasha Lutek, Collection Specialist, Department of Photography, The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Support provided by Art Bridges.

A Fall exhibition celebration will be held at the Mattatuck Museum on Sunday, September 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with remarks by the Museum’s fall exhibitions artists, lenders, and Mattatuck Museum Director, Bob Burns, at 1:00 p.m. The Restless Mountain Blue Grass band, a Connecticut-based acoustic bluegrass band, will be performing on the rooftop terrace at 2:00 p.m. for an additional cost.

The Mattatuck Museum has developed a host of upcoming fall programs inspired by the exhibition for students, families, and adults interested in a variety of subjects, including art, history, literature, and music. During the celebration, Education Programs Manager, Abigail Sites, will be on hand to preview the exciting lineup of fall program offerings.
