Nakashima, Kofod-Larsen, and P.S. Heggen Among Top Designers at Clarke.

Six may be the magic number in July for Clarke. A set of six Nakashima dining chairs with grass seats, and a set of six P.S. Heggens waste paper baskets are among the top highlights in the midcentury design selection at Clarke on Monday, July 20th.
The George Nakashima chairs are accompanied by a Nakashima M10 coffee table from the same estate. The earlier scope of Nakashima's work is especially evidenced in these pieces as they are of a more simple design aesthetic that is capabable of a supplemental or central role in any modern interior. The chairs are estimated at a conservative $4,000/$6,000, while the table will be offered by Clarke at $2,500/$3,500.
The set of six danish P.S. Heggens waste paper baskets are the true mark of Scandinavian accent design. They are examples in both teak and rosewood, and they display the value of design in an everyday object. The function of the item, defined in these particular items, should not detract from the aesthetic quality of the items in the least. Finding a set of 6 is not an easy feat, as comparable auction records would indicate. This set, in great condition, and stamped, will be auctioned at a $4,000/$6,000 estimate in the modern selection on July 20th as well.
A single item that may rival the lots of six is the rosewood Ib Kofod-Larsen "Elizabeth" Chair for Christiansen & Larsen. After Clarke set a record last year for a pair at auction, one which was subsequently broken, another leather upholstered and rosewood chair is up on the block. The as-is upholstery did not affect the price in the last instance, and may not again, as the rosewood frame is in excellent condition. The $2,000/$3,000 estimate is only a conservative guideline for the single chair as it has proven to perform well in the market.
While the Kofod-Larsen highlights seating, it does not encompass all that is available. High quality examples include a Jens Quistgaard Stokke lounge chair, estimated $800/$1,200, a Grete Jalk sofa, estimated $800/$1,200, an Edward Wormley for Dunbar bentwood lounge chair, estimated $800/$1,200. Many others are listed in the complete catalog which can now be viewed on the Clarke website.
Among the functional design offerings is a number of storage pieces. A Milo Baughman two tone burl and chrome wall unit, estimate $1,500/$2,500, and a magnificent rosewood paneled Poul Cadovious wall unit with desk, estimated $1,000/$1,500, are the quintissential midcentury examples of shelving and storage combination. A pair of fine and original Edward Wormley for Dunbar chests, with the rare addition of an original receipt from 1950, estimated $1,000/$1,500 is also featured.
Paul McCobb for Calvin, Cedric Hartman, Tommi Parzinger, Borge Mogensen, Hans Olsen, Theodore Muller, Mariani, Memphis, James Howell, and others are just a few of the important names that will be featured in the sale along with the aforementioned pieces.
