Mixed History: Cubism-inspired Icons by Iva Milanova
- NYC, New York
- /
- September 26, 2017
With an education in Art History and Archaeology, Bulgarian artist Iva Milanova finds inspiration in religious iconography and the rich, cross-cultural history of mosaic tiling. Her portraits and abstract patterns often employ reductive, flattened imagery, juxtaposing the candescent palette of Medieval, illuminated manuscripts with the stark, severe figuration of Cubism. The artist displays a sensitivity for color, having learned to weave, dye, and mix colors from her grandmother at a very early age.
While still attending high school, Iva Milanova studied textile design, watercolor painting, and graphic design at the School of Art in Sofia, Bulgaria, before undertaking her higher education at Humboldt University in Berlin. Her academic studies spurred her creative mind, and Milanova has since achieved numerous recognitions for her painting. Last year, she exhibited works at the Florence Biennale, Salon D’Automne in Paris, and contributed artwork to Contemporary Masters Volume V. Most recently, she was hailed “Top Influential Artist” at Beijing’s International Art Exhibition. Iva Milanova lives and works in Berlin.
