August Toulmouche (French, 1829-1890)

An important, museum-quality, painting by French 19th century genre painter August Toulmouche, best known for his intimate interior scenes depicting women in elegant costumes is up for bidding, with a start price of just $1,000.

The 1880’s painting depicts a beautiful young lady, in a pink silk dress holding a floral bouquet and reading a love letter. Regarded as one of the leading 19th century “costume painters” alongside Frederic Soulacroix, the attention to life-like detail can be seen in this paintings pink silk dress.

Toulmouches role in art history is also notable, as being an early mentor to Claude Monet. Toulmuche married a cousin of Claude Monet in 1862, and was asked by Monets family to mentor the young artist. Monet worked briefly in Toulmouches studio in Paris, after which Toulmouche directed him to study with Charles Gleyre. It was at Gleyres studio where Monet first encountered fellow impressionists Renoir, Sisley, and Bazille.

The painting comes from the estate of celebrity art dealer Earl McGrath. Earl McGrath was the former head of Rolling Stone Records and a bicoastal gallerist. McGrath’s wife Camilla was an Italian countess and an exceptional photographer. The couples residences in New York and Los Angeles were gathering places for the worlds most influential social figures, including artists such as Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Jasper Johns, and Hollywood stars like Harrison Ford, Jack Nicholson and Dennis Hopper.

Leon Kroll (American 1884-1974) Title: Abandoned Quarry, Gloucester, 1944 Medium: Oil on Canvas Size: 31 1/4" x 42" inches Date: 1944

The McGraths were noted for their exceptional art collection, and taste, and this can be seen in the present lot. This classical 19th century paintings restrained background palette give it a modern sensibility. This modern feel is further enhanced by Earl McGraths choice of the contemporary bronze metal frame, which lends this painting a timeless classical feel.

The Lot is estimated at $9,000-12,000, and bidding starts at just $1,000.

European Paintings

Carlyle’s June 14 auction features a number of desirable, high quality paintings by leading 19th century artists such as Leon Perrault (1832-1908) Etienne Bouchardy (1792-1849) Frits Thaulow (1847-1906), Louis Aston Knight (1873-1948) and many other leading names.

Impressionist paintings offered in the auction include exceptional quality paintings by Georges D’Espagnat (1870-1950), Mane Katz (1894-1962)

American Paintings

The auction features numerous American paintings from the 19th century to 1950’s.

One of the highly anticipated lots includes a painting by Leon Kroll “Abandoned Quarry, Gloucester, 1944”. Regarded as one of Leon Kroll’s finest works, this painting measures and impressive 31 1/4” x 42” inches, and has an extensive exhibition history.

Takashi Murakami Title: Flowerball: Multicolor Medium: screenprint in colors with cold stamp and high gloss varnish on circular wove paper, Date: 2006 Size: 28” x 28” diameter

From 1912 onwards, Leon Kroll spent summers on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, on the outskirts of Gloucester. Kroll was inspired by the numerous granite quarries of the area, many of which became inactive after the industry declined in the 1920s. This subject matter was perfect for the direction of Kroll's art as he moved from an Impressionist style to one influenced by Cézanne, to which he had been introduced by Leo Stein in Paris in 1927. In this painting, we can see Cezannes influence on the simplified shapes and colored planes which create volume and depth through subtle gradations of hue and tone.  This painting is a prime example of Kroll's commitment to a realist art tempered with abstract principles.

The estimate is a reasonable $12,000-18,000 and bidding start at just $6,000

Other important American paintings in the auction include works by Robert Wood, Eugene Savage, David Burliuk, Charles Robert Knight, and other rare and highly collected painters from the 19th century to the 1950’s are offered. Of special interest is an early painting by Andrew Thomas Schwartz (1867-1942), titled “Election News”. Likely painted in the 1890's during his studies at Cincinnati art academy, with Franck Duveneck. The painting bears a Berry-Hill Galleries label verso, and is from a Bel Air estate.
