Auction Records Set for Women Artists in Bonhams' Made in California Sale

Bonhams' May 2 sale of Made in California: Contemporary Art, achieved US$922,875 and the top lot of the sale was Untitled (from the Point as a Set series) by Claire Falkenstein (1908-1997), circa 1960, which realized $97,500.

Alexis Chompaisal, Director of Made in California: Contemporary Art, commented: “This auction celebrated California’s important female artists and we are especially pleased with the exceptional results achieved by Claire Falkenstein. Her structure Untitled (from the Point as a Set series), is one of the finest examples of works from her Point as a Set series to come to auction, as well as Sonia Gechtoff’s (1926-2018) Untitled (#4), Untitled (#3), Untitled (#5), 1960, which realized $15,000, a new world auction record for the artist.”

Further highlights in the sale were:

  • Helen Pashgian (b. 1934), Untitled #5, 2006, achieved $17,500 after an estimate of $3,000-5,000.
  • Joe Goode (b. 1937), Miskolc (from the Ozone series, No. 16), 1992, achieved $32,500 after an estimate of $15,000-20,000.
  • John Altoon (1925-1969), Untitled (from Hyperion series), 1964-65, achieved $77,500, after an estimate of $40,000-60,000.
